Understand the Cause. Explore the Options.

Recurring rectal bleeding deserves a clear diagnosis and a thoughtful treatment plan. When internal hemorrhoids are the confirmed source, embolization may be one option to discuss after previous treatment has not provided adequate relief or when other approaches are unsuitable.

Rectal bleeding is not always caused by hemorrhoids. An examination and, when appropriate, additional testing are important before treatment.

How it works

Treating the Blood Supply, Without Removing Hemorrhoidal Tissue

Hemorrhoidal artery embolization is a catheter-based treatment that reduces blood flow through selected arteries supplying internal hemorrhoids. The goal is to reduce bleeding. Unlike hemorrhoidectomy, it does not surgically remove the hemorrhoidal tissue.

    Follow up

How Embolization Reduces Blood Flow to Hemorrhoids

  • A thin catheter is introduced through an artery, usually near the groin.
  • It is threaded to the arteries that supply the internal hemorrhoids.
  • Small embolic particles are placed to reduce blood flow and bleeding.

Minimally Invasive Treatment for Hemorrhoids

  • Why bleeding, prolapse, or pain make hemorrhoids worth treating.
  • How a catheter reaches the arteries that supply the hemorrhoids through a small incision, usually at the wrist or groin.
  • Why most patients don't feel the work inside the arteries, and how X-ray contrast shows the physician where they are.
  • What the day itself looks like: sedation for comfort, and home the same day.

Treatment choices

The Right Treatment Depends on the Problem

Conservative care
Dietary, bowel-habit, and medication approaches may be appropriate initially.
Rubber-band ligation
An office-based option for selected internal hemorrhoids.
Hemorrhoidal artery embolization
A catheter-based option for selected patients, focused primarily on bleeding control.
Hemorrhoid surgery
May be appropriate for certain advanced, external, or prolapsing hemorrhoids.

Some options require evaluation or treatment by a gastroenterologist or colorectal surgeon.

Limitations and risks

Symptoms can persist or return after embolization, and another treatment may be needed. Risks include access-site bleeding or bruising, infection, contrast-related complications, and unintended injury to other tissue. Serious complications can occur. Your physician will review the risks that apply to you.

Insurance & cost

Know the Coverage and Cost Before Treatment

Insurance coverage for hemorrhoidal artery embolization is not universal. Benefits, medical-necessity requirements, and authorization rules vary by plan. Our team can discuss the review process and any available payment options before you decide on treatment.

An evaluation does not guarantee eligibility for embolization or insurance approval.
